Kurz gesagt

Privacy policy (English)

Last updated: 03.11.2026. This policy covers the website lifeboat.farazfarid.com and the Mac app Lifeboat. The German version above is binding.

Controller

Fabian Faraz Farid, Richard-Wagner-Straße 137, 41065 Mönchengladbach, Germany, lifeboat@farazfarid.com.

In short

  • The website sets no cookies, uses no analytics or advertising services and loads no fonts or scripts from other servers.
  • The app backs up your files, encrypted, to the destination you choose (your disk, your NAS or your cloud storage). I run no backup storage and have no access to your backups or your password.
  • Besides your destination, the app only connects to Dodo Payments (license check) and to this website (update check).

Website: hosting and server logs

The website runs on a server of Contabo GmbH (Germany) and is delivered through Cloudflare, Inc., which protects the connection, caches content and manages the domain's DNS records. When you visit, these services process technically necessary data such as IP address, time, requested address and browser identifier to deliver the page and fend off attacks (Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR). Data processing agreements are in place with both providers. Cloudflare may transfer data to the USA, safeguarded by the EU-US Data Privacy Framework and standard contractual clauses. Server logs are deleted after a short time.

The Lifeboat app

Lifeboat backs up the folders you choose (usually your home folder) with the open source program restic, which ships inside the app. restic encrypts all data with AES-256 on your Mac before it goes to the destination; the key comes from your password. The password and the logins for network shares and cloud storage are stored only in your Mac's keychain. Backups are stored only at the destination you set up: your disk, your NAS or your own account with a cloud provider (for example Cloudflare, Backblaze, Amazon Web Services or Hetzner), under your own contract and that provider's terms. I receive no copy and have no access. Schedule, history, restore probe results and settings stay on your Mac. With Full Disk Access the app reads protected folders only to back them up and to compare them during probes. There is no advertising, tracking or analytics. “Copy Diagnostics” (Settings › General) copies versions, permissions, destination types and recent results to the clipboard, without file names or passwords; you decide whether to send it to me.

Update check

About once a day the app loads lifeboat.farazfarid.com/appcast.xml from this website to see whether a new version exists (Sparkle). Like any website request, the server sees the IP address, time and the app identifier with its version number. No data about your files or backups is sent (Art. 6(1)(b) and (f) GDPR).

Purchase

Dodo Payments handles purchase and payment as merchant of record; its privacy policy is linked at checkout. Dodo Payments gives me your name, email address, order data and license key so I can provide the license, answer questions and handle withdrawals (Art. 6(1)(b) GDPR).

License check in the app

When you activate a license key, the app sends the key and your Mac's name to the Dodo Payments license API. After that it checks about once a week whether the key is still valid, and releases the seat when you remove it. Files, file names, passwords and details about your backups are never sent (Art. 6(1)(b) GDPR). Transfers to the USA are covered by the EU-US Data Privacy Framework or standard contractual clauses.

Email and support

If you write to me, I process your details to answer (Art. 6(1)(b) or (f) GDPR) and delete them once they're no longer needed and no retention duty applies. Emails to farazfarid.com addresses are received, stored and sent for me by Resend (Resend, Inc., San Francisco, USA) under a data processing agreement; possible access from the US is covered by the EU Commission's standard contractual clauses.

Withdrawal form

If you withdraw with “Cancel contract”, I process your name, email address, order number, purchase date, optional message and the time of receipt to confirm receipt, match the contract and arrange the refund (Art. 6(1)(c) GDPR with § 356a BGB). My server at Contabo GmbH in Germany receives the form; Resend, Inc. (USA) sends the confirmation email as processor. I keep the withdrawal for documentation until the statutory limitation period ends (usually 3 years from the end of the year).

Your rights

You have the right of access, rectification, erasure, restriction of processing, data portability and objection (Art. 15 to 21 GDPR), and the right to lodge a complaint with a supervisory authority, for example the State Commissioner for Data Protection and Freedom of Information of North Rhine-Westphalia.
